"Robin may, in counting those 49 words, be too far down towards one
end of the scale, but if we don't explore both ends, well, we might never
find that balancing point."

Thanks, and if you don't mind; on this great Inconvenience
with which we choose to entertain ourselves, count me
on the side of the skyship with Miles and Pugnax. I'll be
conversing---

"Pugnax and Ksenja's generations---at
least one in every litter will follow a career as a sky-dog
---have been joined by other dogs, as well as cats, birds,
fish, rodents and less-terrestrial forms of life."

---with Miette, my fine feline companion, as she vocalizes her decidedly
Frequency-Modulated purr and yowls her frequent wisecracks.
Consider me, if you will, as necessary ballast, without which
the whole sick crew would fly overboard. I am doing you all the
great service of making you look comparatively sane.

I saw the Donald Tyson article about a decade ago. I can
see that what Tyson's up to as a writer---Lotsa H.P. Lovecraft
related material---is not my cup of tea, but found Dee's relation
of the number "49" to apocalypse/revelation pertinent,
then noticed that the final word of the book was not a word,
but a number---"49"---and if I counted backwards from there to the
49th word, that's where I would land---with the sound of a lock
snapping shut. Pynchon, if I recall correctly, mentions Gematria
somewhere in AtD---certainly spends enough time writing
about the kabballah all over all his books---so it's not like I'm off
the author's map.

As long as you folks are Etymologically "Scrying" folks
names---I know that's gotta be an "ology" with a proper
title---work over Webb Traverse for a while. That name's
even more overloaded with multiple meanings than Oed's.
