"Don't know if this has been mentioned, but "penny black"
is the nickname of the first adhesive postage stamp--issued
by Great Britain in 1840."

>From the "Official Stamp Collector's Bible", by Stephen R. Datz:

"The world's first postage stamp made its debut in May 1840.
Printed in black, it became known as the Penny Black. It was
a simple affair, an engraved profile of the Young Queen Victoria
together with the words "Postage" and "One Penny". The Penny
Black was designed by William Corbould, inspired by a bust of
Victoria that appeared on a medal created earlier by William
Wyon. Millions of Penny Blacks were sold during the next few
years, and many survive. Despite their age, they are still quite
affordable and within the reach of any collector who wants one."

I'm curious as regards the page where Penny Black first appears
in Against the Day and have a question: Are any of the
letters/communications in Against the Day devoid of anomalies
derived from the mode of delivery or the nature of the
postal/communication system deployed???
