Here is a bit of statistical info as regards the use of 'couple-three' in 
Pynchon's fiction.

M&D: none

AtD, well, I don't have the electronic text yet, but he does abuse that 
expression in this novel. I think he uses it in AtD more often than in all 
of his previous novels taken together.
