Pynchon, through his agent, his wife, would have had to at least approve the use of this excerpt if the choice originally came from his publisher.

Well we still don't know just who did decide to use that excerpt. Might have
been Pynchon, might have been his publisher, etc. Now that we do know the
excerpt wasn't an aberration, or a scene from a book-within-a-book, is still
seems an odd choice to use as the first glimpse of ATD.
