I've wondered if Darby's meant to be a stand-in for Americana -- the sort of "by-gosh" naive idealism of old-time smalltown America, which was replaced with the more jaded "how are you going to keep them on the farm once they've seen Gay Paree" attitude of WWI.  The Chicago World's Fair was a vague transition from the treating of native peoples as side-show oddities, to pretending an objective quais-scientific interest in them.
