I don't see night as being against the day, because night is just the
natural opposite of day. I see "against" the day being opposition,
active fight against the light of day. In its most simple
manifestation a thing standing between a windowfull of sunlight and
the dark interior of the room is situated "against" the daylight.
But your take of dreams being a component of a fight against the day
does make sense to me. The "day" in that sense being the harsh
reality of the world. Pynchon I'm sure packs multiple meanings,
sometimes contradictory, in his major metaphors.
