"'... the inexorably rising tide of World Anarchism, to be found
peculiarly rampant, in fact, at our current destination--a sinister
affliction to which I pray we shall suffer no occasion for exposure
more immediate than that to be experienced, as with Pugnax at this
moment, safely within the fictional leaves of some book.'" (AtD, Pt.
I, pp. 5-6)
World Anarchism
Anarchism is the name of a political philosophy or a group of
doctrines and attitudes that are centered on rejection of any form of
compulsory government ("state") and supporting its elimination. The
term "anarchism" is derived from the Greek αναρχία ("without archons"
or "without rulers"). Thus "anarchism," in its most general meaning,
is the belief that all forms of rulership are undesirable and should
be abolished.
There is a variety of types and traditions of anarchism with various
points of difference....

The Haymarket Riot
The Haymarket Riot on May 4, 1886, in Chicago is generally considered
to be the origin of international May Day observances and in popular
literature, inspired the caricature of "a bomb-throwing anarchist."
The causes of the incident are still controversial, although deeply
polarized attitudes separating the business class and the working
class in late 19th century Chicago are generally acknowledged as
having precipitated the tragedy and its aftermath....
