"There remained in the western sky only an after-glow of deep crimson,
against which could be seen Miles's silhouette, as well as those of
the heads of the other boys above the curved rim on the gondola."
(AtD, Pt. I, Ch. 2, p. 14)


This is another of those moment where I'm convinced there's a
particular image being described, cf. ...

"Loren Passerine, on his podium, hovered like a puppet master, his
eyes bright, his smile practiced and relentless." (Lot 49, Ch. 6, p.
183)

... except I've no particular analogue in mind yet.  But if nothing
else, though, there's a certain sanguinary (and not necessarily in a
good sense) aspect there, as if they're emerging in the aftermath of
something particularly bloody (as, or so I hear *SPOILER ALERT* the
novel itself just might).  Help!
