That's one of the instances in which Pynchon uses cliche material actually
avoiding using a cliche. He didn't use 'crimson afterglow' which would have
been extremely hackneyed, just look how many times it has been used

You will not find 'afterglow of deep crimson' there.
However, if you search for 'afterglow of crimson' you may come across such a
sentence:
"And as background to this pervasive peace, stood the Himalayas, white and
holy,
their summits reaching into an afterglow of crimson."
