"'About the fringes,' Randolph reminded the liberty-goers, 'of any
gathering on the scale of the Exposition, are apt to lurk vicious and
debased elements, whose sole aim is to take advantage of the unwary.
I will not dignify it by naming that sinister quarter where such
dangers are most probably to be encountered. The very vulgarity of
its aspect, particularly by night, will speak for itself ...'" (AtD,
Pt. I. Ch. 2, p. 16)

"reminded the liberty-goers"
Can't help but hear a certain politicization of, political subtext in,
Randolph's caveat here already, but esp. in, uh, light of that
"liberty-goers" ...
"that sinister quarter"
What quarter? Tim? Anyone? Doesn't "speak for itself" to me, and I
live ninety miles away. But do also note the recurrence of "quarter,"
"quarters," "plus-fours," "forty-four" et al., uh *SPOILER ALERT*
reading ahead again ...
"partcularly by night"
"It's always night, or we wouldn't need light."

This suddenly strikes me, by the way, as tres gnostique ...
