Famous New York performance artist Laurie Anderson
dedicated a song called "Gravity's Angel" on her album
Mister Heartbreak (Warner Brothers, 1984) to Thomas
Pynchon....

"The End of the Moon," Laurie Anderson's most recent
performance piece, which opened last night at the
Brooklyn Academy of Music, is about the juxtaposition
of new technologies and old. It's full of
juxtapositions, but placed - like the candles and the
computer - in such a way that it is never clear if the
contrasts are intentional or accidental. When you
bring so many pieces into the equation, there are
bound to be connections somewhere.

The piece grew out of Ms. Anderson's tenure as NASA's
first artist in residence. In it she talks about going
to the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore;
the explosion of the space shuttle Columbia; the
evolution of spacesuits. She also talks about her dog,
Sept. 11, Thomas Pynchon....

Thomas Pynchon I admire very much. And now I'm using
"artist" in the broadest sense of the word. Gravity's
Rainbow is just so beautiful because it's very
multidimensional. I really like books that you can
kind of hear as much as think about, that are so
graphic and visual. I wanted to make an opera of that
book, actually, and I wrote to him and asked him if
that would be OK (I actually found him; he's quite
reclusive). And he wrote me this funny letter. He
said, 'You can do it, but you can only use banjo.' And
so I thought, 'Well, thanks. I don't know if I could
do it like that.' I suppose it was his polite way of
saying, 'No. No way can you do this.'
