Anybody who truly believes that Hollander, or any
other perceptive critic, does Pynchon readers a
"disservice" by thoughtfully researching the texts and
sharing that research with other readers - please get
a grip.

Disagree with the critic's views, if you will, but any
reader who manages to lead others to think about a
text in a new light, even if that interpretation might
ultimately be discarded, is doing other readers a
tremendous service, imo, not a disservice.

If a critic's tone is offputting, for some reason in
the opinion of a particular reader, may I gently
suggest that you get over it and deal instead with the
textual evidence and reasoning that the critic does
present. That's almost never done here, regarding
Hollander's articles. They get the blunt instrument
bashing, a few well-oiled phrases usually (no names
mentioned in these general obs. here, please note)
tossed off without much obvious thought and
unsupported by close reading anywhere near what
Hollander puts into his articles.

If Hollander's critics made anything like the effort
that he makes in reading and interpreting Pynchon,
they might wind up with something interesting to say
about Pynchon's texts, instead of the same old same
old inaccurate and unfair ad hominem observations
about a critic that most of them haven't even read.

IMHO, naturally.
