Actually not identical. They're two different fonts. The front (black) version is somewhat more extended (the letterforms stretched along the horizontal) and there are some slight design differences--the M in Thomas has sloping vertical strokes in the palest sans serif version, and doesn't in the black one. It's difficult to identify a font by looking only at the caps, especially with sans serifs, but the sloping M is one of the distinctive features of a typeface called, appropriately, Futura.
I think the question here is how much of this typography is meant to be illustrative of the text and how much is just designer's fancy. Having worked with a few art directors in my time, I don't think I would parse the thing too fine.
