Foax--I'm barely keeping a bit ahead of the ATD:  ATD experience, as I 
steal time to read the novel (up to about page 120 right now).  But in 
any case, I'm enjoying the discussion, and just wanted to contribute 
this:

I hardly dare believe that perhaps Messr. Pynch chanced upon my own 
little jape regarding a group called the "Chums" when it first appeared 
in THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION some years ago, and 
later, here, online:

But I offer it now simply as springing from the same impulses that 
motivated TRP in his Chums of Chance segments.

My piece is full of lots of SF in-jokes, but still enjoyable by one and 
all, I hope.
