Say," it occurred to a large and criminal-looking individual who had been
whittling an image of a locomotive from a piece of firewood with one of
those knives known throughout the prisons of our lands as an Arkansas
toothpick, "you're not of the vegetarian persuasion, I hope" (p. 31)

"The Vegetarian Cycling & Athletic Club was founded in 1887
when Leslie Large of Lewisham placed notices in various
periodicals inviting vegetarian cyclists to contact him with a
view to forming a club. Henry Light, a founder member who
was elected captain in 1890, soon became the driving force
behind the club, which saw cycling members achieve national
and international successes in the early decades of the 20th
century. W W Greaves, a one-armed member, secured a world
record by riding 45,383 miles in 1936"

George Bernard Shaw (1856-1960), stated: "The average
life expectancy of a meat eater is 63. I am on the verge of
85 and still work as hard as ever. I have lived quite long
enough, and I am still trying to die; but I simply cannot do it.
A single beef steak would finish me, but I cannot bring
myself to swallow it. I am oppressed with dread of living
forever. That is the only disadvantage of vegetarianism."

Buddha’s famous quote “To become vegetarian is to step
into the stream which leads to nirvana,” goes to show how
the Buddhists also believe in peace and coexistence with
the world around us. Many Buddhists live vegetarian or
vegan lives because of the mercy they feel for the animals.
“May all that have life be delivered from suffering” is an
ancient Buddhist prayer started by Lord Buddha.

Of course, today's Anarchists are connected to Vegans:
