In some ways I think Pynchon is confronting the language of the Bush
speech writers and the neocons and religious right along with their
cooption of Biblical language and Christianity. Vibe and Foley are
the quintescence of this language. One also thinks of the way the
Nixon and Reagun boys took a bullet for the gipper and were later
rewarded and returned to high power as W's right hand men. I sense
that TP believes the word evil is legitimate and properly applied
particularly to this kind of wanton bloody greed. But he goes further
with the suggestion that the snake in Genesis was an alein, and
drawing a comparison to the northern snakefaced badass who comes to
bring havoc to that great city.
