NP:Richard Powers

The Gold Bug Variations, by R. Powers has been on my reading list for ages (put there by various recommendations from the P-list), but Powers' most recent book, The Echo Makers, fell into my hands first.  I just finished it, and while I enjoyed it, I didn't consider it a great book by any means.  Powers' ruminations on the nature of thought and the self got a little redundant, and his intertwining of that theme with environmentalism and the migration of the cranes didn't mesh that well with the plot (imo).

Just wondering how this book compares with Gold Bug and his other writings.
