(389) "Huerta's folks ain't that far back. You think
maybe that's who these people are running from?"

Huerta was a full-blooded Huichol Indian,
so there was no solidarity among the aboriginal peoples.

Frank is wondering if the same pursuers are
after both his party and the 3 Tarahumara.
This isn't definitively answered, but it seems likely.
Ewball hums "La Cucaracha", which is a tune already
associated with Huerta (p 375)

----390 --
hasta luego is "until soon", lueguito a diminutive

Frank finds the Indians near another cave - this
region must be great for spelunkers.

from Pynchonwiki:
anarquistas
Spanish: anarchists.

El Espinero
Spanish: The thorn-man

shabotshi
This is a Tarahumare word meaning "bearded one"
and is most often used to refer, with derision,
to Mexicans. Among the Tarahumare men, beards are rare.

brujo
Spanish: sorcerer, shaman.

Que toza tienes alla
"What a log you've got there." Frank should be flattered.
A toza is pretty much an entire tree trunk

----- thornomancy - "gazing into scatterings of thorns..."

FWIW - Dante's Inferno Canto XX
“See next the wretches, who the needle left,
The shuttle and the spindle, and became 120
Diviners: baneful witcheries they wrought
With images and herbs. But onward now:
For now doth Cain with fork of thorns confine
On either hemisphere, touching the wave
Beneath the towers of Seville.

(Cain with fork of thorns touching the wave
is the moon setting, indicating they have to move on,
so not directly indicating "thornomancy", but
it came up when I searched for "thorn divination")

Tarahumara
http://lucy.ukc.ac.uk/EthnoAtlas/Hmar/Cult_dir/Culture.7872
"The status of shaman is reached through
apprenticeship, and these men and women are both
feared and respected for their powers of divination,
curing, and sorcery."

----- "...and telling people what would happen to them
in the near future, the grammatical tense
that mattered most these days back up in the Sierra"

the compression of temporal bandwidth in long-duration
states of emergency (such as colonization and genocide)

--- the other Estrella "...very young, with a notable
great fall of black hair, big expressive eyes,
and a fiery way of using them. Dressed for the trail,
meaning hardly at all..."

there's a bit of good old Margaret Mead uninhibited native
sexual curiosity afoot, but Frank is pretty unfazed by it.
