dunno, that idea kind of blindsided me
I have Kit aboard Stupendica pigeonholed as another
Iceland Spar effect, the pleasure cruiser transformed
under the aegis of war into a battleship
and Kit refracted over into the crew section
even though he's a paying (well, paid-for) passenger
so the boat he debarks from isn't the boat he
embarked upon - though, thankfully, his
predetermined destination overrides his press-ganging
into the naval command
kind of like Pynchon returning to Cornell after
his Navy year...
digging deeper into the passage, there's something
that speaks to me right at this moment:
"He lapsed into silence, torpor, for scaleless moments
seized by memories of desert plateau, mountain peaks,
meadows full of Indian paintbrush and wild
primrose, some unexpected river two steps off the trail -
then released back into this twenty-knot push
into the uncreated."
for my part, I am finding it hard to let go
of Old Mexico, to venture with the Chums into the
Tenderloin...still watching Frank's sensations,
turn, in a turnful sentence full of clauses,
into regret...
regret that he didn't work out as Tarahumara
Stray's match;
regret that the cave whose contents
he chose to let propel him wasn't the rain-cave,
but the cave with the crystal bearing the
vision of the fulfillment of revenge;
regret that the scientific viewpoint (p 393 -
"The desert is something that has evolved over
geological time. Not somebody's
personal punishment") sometimes forecloses
on passionate interpretations
-- even regret that Frank didn't stay on in
the mariachi band, regret for Gaston Villa
having to endure exile from Mexico,
regret for the Oust (gosh, the middle 2 letters
of their family name is the same as "Bush")
family, obviously multitalented
and intelligent people, who could be adorning
the intelligentsia and princes of commerce of
their homeland, for some reason spending their lives
caught up in international intrigue and
deadly games which place their lives and souls
in jeopardy...
But Kit as Christ?! Would like to hear more, please.
"jesus was a sailor, when he walked upon the water"
(Leonard Cohen)
