on a simplistic level, it's a door back to real life:
finding out a co-worker has a friendly side, going out
for coffee after work with or without romantic intentions...
i've never flown in a balloon, but i've done that -
and maybe even been the ogre turned friend a couple times
lots of reminders of human interactions like that
make a person feel at home in the Pynchon books.
