ATD stars above, abyssal plain below

Same here. P has always been capable of piercingly sweet moments, usually
just some simple impulsive kindness amid the mania. But he sustains it for
long stretches of M&D's friendship, and makes me feel them thinking of each
other -- shaped by each other -- through all their post-America years. 

When the kids say "We'll go there. We'll live there," I can believe in fresh
starts, in a much less qualified and ambivalent way than is offered at the
end of AtD.
