Looks like that Michiko Kakutani gal is some kind of speed-reader, 
eh? And not to be too be too contentious about matters from the 
recent past, but Pynchon's writings are particularly impervious to 
speed reading, requiring re-reading in order to follow the perilious 
paths of their multiple plots.

I won't be working at the bookstore during the "night of a thousand 
wacked-out muggles" [1], which waylays my plan of showing up as 
"He Who Shall Not Be Named [tm]"---Phil Spector in his white 
super-afro, combining the nacreous aura of Aleister Crowley with 
the cigarette smoke and hangovers of a roadie-for-life in a single 
ghastly package. As it is, I'll just have to settle for counting the 
money the next day.
