I am printing out from my Webster's Int. Dictionary (quite reliable):
kindred [ME kinrede, kindrede, fr. kin+ -rede (fr. OE raeden condition,
rule, estimation, fr. raedan to advise, rule, guess, read)...]
now, kin [ME, fr. OE cyn; akin to OHG kind child, chunni family, race
gignere to beget, GK genea birth, race, family...]
>Actually, I think the word "kindred" doesn't originally mean related
>by blood (OED anyone?). I think its root is "kind" as in similar type
>or qualities. But that's just a minor quibble. It does mean "family"
>(if not by blood).
