Thanks to a reference on the list (actually an RIP for
Trevanian quite a while back), I recently read Trevanian's
autobiographical novel, _The Crazy Ladies of Pearl Street_,
(quite good, actually)
and learned that he memorized this poem for his favorite teacher,
because she promised a special treat. He found that the treat was
getting to recite it in front of the class.
The Jack London/Robert Service/Kenosha Kid/Warlock genre
does seem to be pretty influential in Pynchon's writing.
In fact maybe it's one of the things that inspired Terrance
to say the books are about work?
