Very good question, Bekah. It is my firm conviction that Pynchon wouldn't
have become the Pynchon we know if he hadn't done that stint in the navy as
well as that job for Boing. That's what most of the graduates of creative
writing programmes lack - real experience, learning not only from books, but
also from real life. I think Pynchon cherishes the latter as much as the
former.
