Check out the 'Prime Directive' of the Star Trek crew in relation to
a guiding principle of the Chums. There is also the "Temporal Prime
Directive." References to at least one of these can be seen in
almost every Star Trek episode. It's alluded to on page 8 in AtD:
"Much as I might be inclined to offer our protection," Lindsay had
informed the agitated youth," here on the ground we are constrained
by our Charter, which directs us never to interfere with legal
customs of any locality down at which we may happen to have touched."

Thomas Pynchon's 2006 novel Against the Day, in a parody of serial
fiction, features a young men's organization, the "Chums of Chance",
whose Charter includes a paraphrase of Star Trek's Prime Directive,
"never to interfere with legal customs of any locality at which we
may have happened to touch."
