I only lost 136 pages (503-638), so I guess I should count myself lucky!
Two-and-a-half (or, perhaps more fittingly, a couple-three) readings seem to
be what this spineless monster was constructed to sustain. Pynchon may have
written a durable text to be reread many times, but Penguin Press has housed
it in a decidely undurable edifice - as if they didn't actually believe
anyone would bother to read this novel more than once. Ah well, I guess
we'll have to wait for the Library of America edition of Pynchon's collected
works; with a bit of luck, it should be here in 50 years or so.
