Don't know whether it's a mystery, exactly: At one point in Moore's comic,
we see the main character actually reading (and quoting) Pynchon's novel,
and at another point you can see the novel V. on the character V.'s
bookshelf. In his foreword to the comic, Moore (who is a self-declared
Pynchon-fan) also specifically names Thomas Pynchon as one of the many
influences that went into shaping his complex manuscript. In short: yes,
there is a link between comic and novel.
