I suppose the mix-up is the inevitable result of your having read Lot 49 so
many times. That novel is, if anything, characterized by a rich gender
confusion: As Oedipa turns on the TV in Echo Courts, this is how Baby Igor
is introduced: "Onto the screen bloomed the image of a child of
indeterminate sex." The Tristero assassins who kill poor Niccolò in 'The
Courier's Tragedy' are described as "effeminate," and Oedipa visits a bar
called The Greek Way in S.F. where she sees "the members of the third sex,
the lavender crowd this city by the Bay is so justly famous for." A-and how
about such character names as Mike Fallopian and Stanley Koteks?
Further confusion may be added by the fact that the chosen partner of your
most famous namesake was called "Marion" - another boy/girl name. Robin Hood
and Marion - who was the guy and who the girl? I can never seem to
remember...

Best,

Tore (a name which, outside Scandinavia, must seem completely indeterminate
as to gender)
