On Books: Do-it-yourself publicity

Tin House books, a small publisher in Portland, Ore.,
has published a 784-page art book in which every page
is a piece of art inspired by an equivalent page of
Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow. Gravity's Rainbow
Illustrated is largely hallucinatory in style, but
then, so is the book. The artwork was originally
displayed at the 2004 Whitney Biennial. As for Thomas
Pynchon, he knows about the publication — artist Zak
Smith e-mailed Pynchon's agent, who is also his wife —
but there has been no response.

The lack of a response tells you he's fine with it.
