Spam"--- that Pynchon firmly placed in the new novel. That 
passage on 101, about how Foly turned Scarsdale onto that
"Kerosene Oil" company, the same "Kerosene Oil" company
that's at the center of all current "Political Spam", that's a real
theme, a real issue in Against the Day, not some personal 
obsession of mine, but a personal obsession of the author.
Can't get around that one.
