yeah - his memory ("reflections of Katje") is playing in his eye like a
tv/film, like his eye is the screen... that's the way i see the entire
image, while also creating a mandala (i don't buy into the swastika, or
cross theories) that has a, because of the black pupil "missing" center...
(as does GR itself, in terms of plot of course)

that's the explanation that has set my mind to rest for a little while at
least.
