An allegory with clear parallels to today’s
international situation, Pigs and Battleships is set
within the brothels and teeming alleys of a small port
town under US occupation. Amidst the black market,
which supplies the American sailors, a young street
tough makes his way by selling hogs (Imamura’s
equating of animals to human beings has never been
more evident), but soon gets caught up with the
yakuza. Imamura elevates this simple gangland tale
with an astonishing damnation of American imperialism.

“An expansive, loopy film of extravagant set pieces
and distinctive dark humour.”—The Village Voice

The Pornographers (Jinruigaku Nyumon Erogotsh Yori)
(1966) 128min
Sat, Mar 17 at 3, 6, 9pm

With Shoichi Ozawa, Sumiko Sakamoto

Subtitled “An Introduction to Anthropology,” The
Pornographers belongs to the canon of voyeuristic
cinema that includes Vertigo and Peeping Tom, albeit
with a wicked sense of black humor. An ebullient man
makes illegal pornography and fetish films ‘for the
common good,’ defying his country that represses its
own libido and human instinct. Imamura renders the
audience as voyeurs as well, shooting through
keyholes, doorways, and fish tanks. The hilarious
pornographic set-pieces must be seen to be believed.

“Among Imamura’s most important and audacious films,
The Pornographers is a perverse, hilarious
portrait.”—James Quandt, Cinematheque Ontario
