Some of the folks I'm encountering whilst learning about Pynchon,
revisionist history and "The Great Game", are people who seem to have
this absurd problem with Pynchon's politics. I have a really weird
suggestion: let's take him at his word, let's assume that he selected
his topics for a reason, that he paints the characters in his novels
the way he intends to render those characters. Scarsdale Vibe and
his minions along with everything Scarsdale Vibe has ever has been
part of or will ever will be a part of---no ifs, ands, or buts---is the
preordained Villain of Against the Day. A deeper reading points to the
same "Them" that Pynchon has been screaming about for years, the
same cabal of interests coming from the far right---including all those
nascent Neo-Cons who first emerged as incubating pod people during
the Nixon Administration---and that's not about to change.
To parphrase a well known public asshole: You get the author you've
got, not the author you want.

Hi Robin
Great post, sounds like an interesting book, I'll have to check
it out. By the way, I didn't want to stir up any trouble on the list
- especially given my imminent segment hosting, for which I
am ill-prepared - but I wanted to let you know how sickened I
was by the way Jasper & monte jumped on your back crying
'NP' when you posted that stuff about Judith Miller. I assume
their right-wing sympathies got all discombobulated by the
language of Watergate coming bubbling up to the surface of
teh BUsh era. Fuck 'em! Could the whole Plamegate affair be
any *more* relevant to Pynchon in general? Luckily there's at
least on line in my upcoming segment that'll allow me an excuse
to bring the matter up.
All the best
John
