This is spoilerish, so delete now if so inclined...
The Chum's level of fictitiousness become very explicit when, in order
to escape the feared corruption of their own organization by the
Visitors, they actively create a meta-life: the Harmonica Academy. It
is a world created by them which doesn't even attempt realism, but is
explicitly a place of escape.
