Does anyone think that the Chums, becoming
"freelancers", their own (limited) masters near
the end reflects any anarcho-syndicalist notions
          of "self-management"?

Yes, I do. It's beginning to dawn on me that polarization
is the ultimate metaphor within Against the Day. How one
interprets the book is going to depend a great deal on
the polarizing filters of any given reader. Whatever light
one's filters permit entry. A very hard-left reading of the novel
yields a different "story" than a center or right reading. But, yes,
note how there is a level of operations the Chums provided, sub
rosa of course, for their sweethearts to "depart the ship at right
angles to its official course to do the adventuring. . . "
