Dave, I've also been quite depressed recently and although I am pretty sure
that your situation is much graver than mine, I just want you to know that I
am genuinely concerned and hope that you will have your lucky streak yet.
Just don't give up, 'when character is lost...' you know. I know someone who
when feeling really bad re-reads The Gulag Archipelago and each time finds
himself very lucky by comparison, don't know if that might work in your
case. In terms of Pynchon, each time I don't feel very good, just the
prospect of re-reading GR and the gloating realisation that no-one miles
about knows English well enough to do that except me makes me very
self-important and cheers me up. And you are by default an ideal Pynchon
reader, Dave, you don't have to learn the language to read him (except a
couple-three references in OED) and you are aware of much of the American
culture Pynchon fiddles with lost on many European readers. You are
intrinsically lucky on this account. Life sucks sometimes, but desperation
sucks even more. Who knows, maybe in a year you will be remembering that
dark period with a laugh. Hold on, man.
