A great appreciator of Pynchon, the late great reader Tony
Tanner says in his monograph which I browsed in at a library
that he thinks Wm Gaddis's The Recognitions was a very important
book for Pynchon's worldview and vision.
So, I read the first page in the Avon paperback edition, page 7 and
read this: "He had had a fondness for traveling, earlier in his life; and it was
the impulse to extend his boundaries which had finally given chance the
field necessary to its operation. "
