Hello everyone, just dropping back in to say cheerio. It's been up to
10 years of your company, and I already miss the engagement but other
demands and inclinations seem to have taken me out of earshot.
It is the case that I'm one of those who is finding the book slow
going. I passed page 400 last time I picked it up. I enjoy what I
read, the comfortable familiarity of his most excellent prose, the
sharpness of his political and philosophical perspectives, the mix
of smart and idjit humour. I slot back into my Pynchonian mindset,
TP's like an old jazzer, riffing on themes, just get your head in the
right space and enjoy the places he'll take you.
But there's not sufficient momentum in the storytelling to make me
hungry for it. It's like beer - I used to drink a couple of pints a
couple of times a week. Now the intervals are months not days. I
enjoy it just as much but there's no urgency to the consumption. I'm
happy with that, and will someday finish ATD and will most likely dig
in the archives for your current discussions - so stick with it...please.
For those 10 years the p-list has been a good part of my intellectual
stimulation. It's never mattered to me how far we strayed from main
point - I've always seen the list in Vonneguttish terms - a
multifarious group held together by one focal point. We always come
back to it, before heading out again.
So I wish you all the best, may you all enjoy good discussions,
pleasureable reading and plentiful wit.
Oh yeh - and keep on digressing...
Mike
