but the scene where he leaves wife and child is quite touching...
he was already a polyamorous card sharp to begin with

isn't part of the point of his tale (and Webb's) that, though
it's true the rich and powerful create many abuses, still the
victims have their own faults?  not that that makes them deserving
of the particular abuses - (though in some ways it leaves them
more vulnerable) - but their lack of moral perfection leads to
interesting plot developments and opportunities for commentary?

It seems to me that the types of epiphanies a man would
experience carrying his murdered father's body home and blowing
off dynamite would hardly be conducive to what most people
would call moral perfection.
