almost a metaphor for reading ATD, the godlike status of the author,
loosing one's way and all other kinds of things...
This reminds me of a particularly funny episode later on in the book on pp
806-07 where the matter of map scale comes up, Theign explaining to Cyprian
the benefits of a certian representational fraction that allows more space
to occur on less paper.
"What's This?" Cyprian said.
"Map of Austria-Hungary."
"Oh. Do I get a magnifying lens with it?"
.... etc....

If you own it for less than $20 bucks, even adjusted for inflation, the
Compact Edition is a miracle and indispensable.
It is the one thing I haven't manage to misplace in over 30 years.....
