It has nothing to do with what's incredulous. It has to do with the  
context and the multiple descriptions in the text of Reef's state of  
consciousness. I believe Webb is stone dead, and Reef is reeling in  
nonordinary consciousness split between above and below, conscious  
and unconscious.

Yes he's really a corpse with some remaining consciousness and with
some some sort of ability to communicate (and he seems a bit confused
too - I'd say he's halfway towards crossing over into the light).  How
much harder is that to believe than a talking dog?
