Kittler congrats Pynchon on 70

In 'Against the Day' Pynchon has toturers, sadists and bomb-throwers, but 
hardly any death scenes save the one in which a certain bomber bleeds to 
death in the broad daylight, murdered by order of one Wallstreet banker. For 
the committee of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, that might be a 
sufficient reason not to give the Nobel Prize to Pynchon. All the more 
touching remains the gesture of Elfriede Jelinek, his translator, when she 
learned about her winning the prize: there is somebody greater than me who 
deserves it.

Daher gibt es bei Pynchon Folterer, Sadisten und Bombenleger, aber kaum 
Todesszenen. Nur der Wallstreet-Banker, der in "Against the Day“ einen 
Bombenleger ermorden ließ, verblutet am hellichten Tag. Für das Komitee von 
Alfred Nobel, dem Dynamiterfinder, mag das schon Grund genug sein, Pynchon 
den Nobelpreis vorzuenthalten. Umso anrührender bleibt die Geste Elfriede 
Jelineks, seiner Übersetzerin, als sie von ihrem Nobelpreis erfuhr: Er 
gebühre einem Größeren.
