The brief scene that Reef shares with Stray is mostly
dialogue; all of which emphasises the rehearsal of
irreconcilible positions. The scene perhaps presages
estrangement, not least in Stray's sardonic reference
to Reef's promise as "a certified miracle".
This is the first time they have spoken of the
baby--previous references have come courtesy of Frank
the outsider-observer--and family ties. Stray it is
who invokes family here: "It's his grandbaby. I'd hate
if they were never to meet." Significantly, her words
are provoked by his failure to make eye-contact.
