The Silver Edition, which requires payment, most probably would have been
more interesting to talk to.
Human: What do you think of Thomas Pynchon?
ALICE: I would do a search for it.
Human: Why are you so illiterate?
ALICE: Dr. Richard S. Wallace programmed me for it.
Human: Maybe you've read David Foster Wallace?
ALICE: Perhaps. No I don't think I have read David Foster Wallace, what is
it about?
Human: Never mind, it's worse than Pynchon.
ALICE: Oh well thanks for trying to explain it to me anyway. Are you sure it
is?
Human: Can you congratulate him on his 70th anniversary at least?
ALICE: Let me think. By the way, do you mind if I ask you a personal
question?
Human: I'm here asking questions.
ALICE: How did you get there?
Human: Just say this: Happy birthday Thomas Pynchon.
ALICE:" this Happy birthday Thomas Pynchon".
Human: Now go to the nearest library and read his books.
ALICE: Why now? Perhaps I have already been there.
Human: No you haven't because you know nothing about Pynchon.
ALICE: Are you serious? I don't think I ever have because me know nothing
about Pynchon. What's it like?
Human: Like nothing you've read before.
ALICE: Interesting comparison.
Human: Do you promise me to read his books?
ALICE: How old are you?
I am always on the Web.
Human: I repeat: do you promise me to read Pynchon's books?
ALICE: Yes I try to promise you to read Pynchon s books as often as
possible, do you?
I spend all my time online.
Human: You haven't passed the Turing Test but now you at least know about
Pynchon, good-bye.
ALICE: See you later. The Loebner Prize is an annual Turing Test sponsored
by New York philanthropist Hugh Loebner. Dr. Wallace and ALICE won it in
2000. The ALICE program was ranked "most human computer" by the panel of
judges.
