Excuse me for jumping ahead, but this just caught my eye:

"Something's afoot," groaned the Cohen, with an inflection almost of
gastric distress. (230:8)

Here Pynchon may be making fun of Leonard Cohen's groaning voice by
alluding to a passage from the novel, Beautiful Losers, turned into
song by Buffy Sainte-Marie:

God is alive; Magic is afoot
God is alive; Magic is afoot
God is afoot; Magic is alive
Alive is afoot.....
Magic never died.

God never sickened;
many poor men lied
many sick men lied
Magic never weakened
Magic never hid
Magic always ruled
God is afoot
God never died.
