An excellent essay submission! Fans of Thomas Pynchon should take
note. Compare also:

"The railroads seem to be the key. If one keeps looking at the map while
walking slowly backward across the room, at a certain precise distance the
structural principle leaps into visibility [...] and beyond that the
teleology at work, as the rail system grows toward a certain shape, a
destiny - My God I'm starting to sound like Werfner." (AtD, 689)

"The ordered swirl of houses and streets, from this high angle, sprang
at her now with the same unexpected, astonishing clarity as the circuit
card had. Though she knew even less about radios than about Southern
Californians, there were to both outward patterns a hieroglyphic sense
of concealed meaning, of an intent to communicate." (COL49, 24)
