Wow, that was fast! Thanks, Mark. It seemed my initial theory was mostly 
correct, then. Now, how to explain that strange anomaly? Intriguing 
stuff.... Maybe Viking Penguin's refusal to grant Everyman's Library an 
extension of that licence had something to do with Pynchon regretting his 
original permission? Let that be my new, completely unsubstantiated theory.
