Pynchon illustrated

They're quite nice, but more than a little obscure (and all these
illustrations employ a very similar hieroglyphic-heavy texture, which
befits a puzzler like Pynchon).  For instance, what does this Vineland
illustration illustrate?

My online translation of the text is pretty rough:

Zoyd  sein Spiegelbild... fuhr sich durch die Haare, drehte sich um,
verharrte einen Augenblick und raste mit Gebrüll und leerem Hirn auf
die Fensterscheibe zu und durch sie hindurch...

to this:

Zoyd beäugte its mirror image… drove themselves by the hair, turned,
remained one instant and rests with roar and empty brain on the
windowpane to and by it through…

So I can now sort of see Zoyd jumping through the bar window.
