Hello, all --
Since the Mobile (AL) Register has not seen fit to post it on their own
webpage, I thought I would share with the list my review of Against the Day,
which was printed in Sunday's paper. It's posted to my own blog, where I
archive the stuff I write for the Register:

I don't know if any of you are following the current death throes of the
newspaper book review (such as what recently happened at the Atlanta
Journal-Constitution), but times are dire if you're not writing for the New
York Times. My editor at the Register received considerable blowback for
printing this in its entirety, rather than cutting it in half. For my own
part, this was difficult to do even in 2200 words, taking up 2/3 of a
page--it still comes off mainly as a "description" of the book, but then
again by nature these pieces are less critical than any true academic
explication.
I'd like to encourage everyone to write their local newspaper editor, and
for what it might be worth let them know that you prize and honor your
daily/Sunday book review page--if you still have one at all.
Thanks,
Jim Gilbert
